The toolkit is agentless, i.e. no special software needs to be installed on the remote computers. Data can simplify the planning process for migrating the computer to Windows 2008/Vista, Microsoft Office 2007, Microsoft Application, Microsoft SQL Server, Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V and Microsoft Virtual Server. There are recommendations for device driver availability, as well as recommendations for any hardware upgrades necessary.
'Microsoft Assessment and Planning Toolkit' includes functionality for gathering performance data from workstations and servers one is considering for consolidation using Hyper-V in addition to Microsoft Virtual Server. Using these performance metrics and a model virtual server host computer, one can generate reports that recommend installatoin and configuration of the physical computers in a virtual server environment. Amongst other new reports are: a Security Center Assessment for client computers, an MS SQL Serverinventory report and a virtual machine inventory report.
'Microsoft Assessment and Planning Toolkit' offers assessment features provided by the 'Windows Vista Hardware Assessment Solution Accelerator', e.g. localization of the Windows Vista assessment reports in many languages incl. German, French, , Japanese, Korean, Spanish and more.
