It is a set of tools and processes to deploy desktop and server platforms into a common deployment console and collection of guidance.
The deployment accelerator allows integration with new Microsoft deployment technologies. It creates a unique path for image creation and automated installation. MDT’s tools and end-to-end guidance reduce deployment time, standardize desktop and server images, limit service disruptions, reduce post-deployment serivce desk costs. It also improves security and configuration management issues.
Microsoft Deployment Toolkit eliminates interaction time, usually required to install desktop and server platforms.
Interaction at the targeted workstation or server takes a few moments, using the LTI (Lite Touch Installation) method.
Alternatively, it can be fully automated using ZTI (Zero Touch Installation).
Zero Touch Installation uses Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager 2007
or Systems Management Server 2003 in conjunction with the Operating System Deployment Feature Pack.
LTI can be used when software distribution tools do not suffice.
MDT 2008 Update 1 uses Configuration Manager 2007’s the stand-alone media-initiated operating system deployment feature.
This offers project management guidance for deployment roles and separates technical documentation for the products and technologies to facilitate automation tasks.
MDT 2008 offers deployment of the following Microsoft operating systems and software products:
